Bridging the gap between HCI, Material Science and Robotics

Workshop at CHI 2019 (in submission)

We invite papers for the CHI 2019 Workshop on “Bridging the gap between HCI, Material Science and Robotics”.  This one-day workshop will offer an interdisciplinary forum of discussion for academics, practitioners, designers and developers, interested in research on reconfigurable materials and actuation, with a particular focus on shape-changing interfaces.

This workshop aims at (1) inspiring the community with recent morphing materials and actuation techniques so that a new research direction for creating advanced interactive devices can be evolved; (2) highlighting the grand challenges in building hardware and software platforms to support synergies between fields; (3) discussing how fields can better collaborate together and highlight concrete steps to do so.

We invite researchers from academia and industry. We welcome contributions from various fields such as Material Science or Robotics, and HCI. The position paper should be at most four pages in the CHI Extended Abstracts format. It should address one or more of the workshop’s goals listed above and the authors are encouraged to bring tangible inspirations to the workshop (e.g. demos, 3D printed objects, fabricated material etc.).

Important dates

  • Participant submissions due: 12 February 2019
  • Participants notified of acceptance: 1 March 2019
